In November 2020, SwipedOn officially ceased supporting iPads running iOS 9. This means devices running iOS 9 on the SwipedOn iPad app can update to version 2.18.5 and devices already running the app can no longer update this to the latest version.
Why is iOS 9 no longer supported?
Devices running iOS 9 have not been recommended for the SwipedOn app for several years. Two generations of iPad cannot upgrade past iOS 9: The iPad 2 (released in 2011) and the iPad 3 (released in 2012). This hardware is very different to what is available now and provides a much poorer experience than using SwipedOn on a newer iPad.
Certain features have already been limited to devices running iOS 10 and above, including the Deliveries and Catering addons, and scan a badge to sign out.
As we improve the SwipedOn app, we are increasingly taking advantage of newer technology offered by newer hardware and iOS software. An example is the Proximity feature, which takes advantage of the iPad operating as a Bluetooth beacon.
Can I update iOS on my device?
If you're using an iPad 4 or newer running iOS 9, you'll be able to update SwipedOn once you have updated iOS. To do this, go to Settings > General > Software Update on your iPad. If an update is available, you'll see it here. Complete the update process, then go to the App Store to update the SwipedOn app.
What if my device can't update beyond iOS 9?
If you are running the SwipedOn app on an iPad 2 or iPad 3, you'll no longer be able to update to the latest version of the app. Version 2.18.5 is the highest version supported by iOS 9. If you have an iPad 2 or 3 that is running an older version of the SwipedOn app, you should update to 2.18.5. This ensures you have access to every feature and issue fix available.
You'll be able to continue running SwipedOn 2.18.5 on iOS 9 indefinitely. You won't, however, receive any further new features, bug fixes, stability or performance improvements.
Now's the time to consider upgrading to a newer iPad. The newer your device, the better the experience your visitors and employees will have using the app. The very latest device isn't necessary, however. As a general rule, any device that can run iOS 12 should be fine.
